Occupational Therapy for Memory Loss and Dementia in Orlando

Occupational therapy for memory loss and dementia helps a person with Alzheimer's or another memory condition keep doing everyday tasks — dressing, bathing, cooking, managing medications — as safely and independently as possible. At Say Yes Therapy & Wellness in Orlando, licensed occupational therapists work one-on-one with the person and their family to adapt routines, simplify tasks and reduce safety risks at home. Outpatient occupational therapy is generally covered by Medicare Part B when it is medically necessary.

    What to Expect

    • A one-on-one evaluation of daily activities, thinking skills and safety
    • Goals set together with the person and their care partners
    • Practical strategies for dressing, bathing, meals and medications
    • Home safety and routine recommendations you can put in place
    • Care partner training on cueing, set-up and safe assistance
    • Regular updates so the whole family understands the plan

How does occupational therapy help someone with dementia?

Occupational therapists focus on the activities that make up a person's day. For someone with memory loss, that means finding out which steps of a task have become difficult and then changing the task, the environment or the support so the person can keep taking part. The aim is to preserve independence and dignity for as long as possible, while keeping the person safe.

Our occupational therapists include Marie Caban, OTR/L, MOT, who holds LSVT and Dementia Care certifications, and Cassie Kriparos, OTR/L, MOT, CNS, a Certified Neuro Specialist with cognitive therapy training.

How does occupational therapy work with care partners and family?

Family members and care partners are part of the plan. The therapist teaches practical techniques — how to give simple step-by-step cues, how to set out clothing or utensils, how to assist with bathing and transfers safely — and explains why certain approaches work better as memory changes. Care partners are welcome at sessions and can ask questions about the situations they face at home.

What home safety and routine changes can occupational therapy recommend?

Recommendations are specific to each home and person. Common examples include better lighting and clear walkways, grab bars and shower seating, labels or pictures on cabinets, simplified stove and medication routines, and a consistent daily schedule that reduces confusion.

Therapy takes place in our Orlando clinic; the therapist works with you to apply these recommendations to your own home.

Does Medicare cover occupational therapy for dementia?

Medicare Part B generally covers outpatient occupational therapy when it is medically necessary and provided under a plan of care, including for people with a dementia diagnosis. Your deductible and coinsurance apply, and Medicare Advantage and commercial plans vary. We verify benefits before the first visit — see our Medicare and insurance page.
